Everything you need to know about the CFA qualification — in one place.
If you have ever wondered what separates a fund manager at BlackRock from a finance graduate who never quite broke into the investment world, a significant part of the answer is three letters: CFA. The Chartered Financial Analyst designation is the most rigorous and most respected credential in the investment management industry — and understanding what it involves will take you five minutes to read and potentially transform your career trajectory.
CFA stands for Chartered Financial Analyst. It is awarded by the CFA Institute, a global, nonprofit organisation headquartered in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA, and founded in 1962. The Institute has over 190,000 active charterholders in 165+ countries. Unlike most finance credentials, CFA Institute writes its own curriculum, sets its own exams, and enforces its own ethics standards, making the designation consistent and trusted worldwide.
To earn the CFA charter, candidates must pass three progressive exams (Level I, II, and III), accumulate at least 4,000 hours of relevant professional experience, and submit two professional references. The experience and exams can run concurrently — you do not need to finish all three levels before working in finance.
The CFA programme is structured around three progressive levels. You must pass each level before sitting the next — there are no exemptions, no shortcuts, and no partial credit. This is deliberate: the rigour of the process is precisely what makes the charter valuable to employers.
Unlike ACCA or CPA, CFA offers no exemptions for prior qualifications — not for CA, MBA, ACCA, or any other designation. A CA Final pass holder starts at Level I. A Harvard MBA starts at Level I. This is not a flaw — it is the source of the charter's credibility. Every CFA charterholder worldwide has passed the same three exams. When a hiring manager at a fund house sees "CFA" on a CV, they know exactly what that candidate has demonstrated.
To be awarded the CFA charter, you must demonstrate 4,000 hours of relevant professional experience in investment decision-making or analysis. This experience can be accumulated before, during, or after the exams. Many candidates work in finance while studying — counting their work hours toward the experience requirement simultaneously. Once all three exams are cleared and experience is confirmed, you apply for CFA Institute membership and receive the charter.
CFA Institute charges a one-time enrolment fee (USD 350) and a per-exam registration fee (USD 900–1,250 depending on when you register — early registration is cheaper). Nahata Professional Academy's tuition fees cover mentoring, study materials, recorded lectures, live sessions, and mock exams. During your free counselling session, our team explains the full fee structure at each level.
Eight reasons why CFA is the qualification of choice for anyone serious about a career in investment management, equity research, or wealth management.
CFA is the single most respected credential in the investment industry worldwide. Fund managers, equity analysts, and portfolio managers at top firms are expected — often required — to hold or be pursuing CFA.
CFA is accepted everywhere investment decisions are made — London, New York, Singapore, Dubai, Hong Kong, Mumbai. It is not a regional credential. It is a universal one.
CFA charterholders globally earn 20–30% more than peers without the credential in comparable roles. In India, a CFA charterholder at the right firm can command Rs.20–50 LPA within 5–7 years.
Unlike MBA programmes that cover broad management theory, CFA is entirely focused on investment analysis skills — equity valuation, fixed income, derivatives, portfolio construction. Directly applicable from day one.
CFA Institute's Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct are built into every level. Employers know a CFA charterholder has been rigorously trained in fiduciary responsibility — a critical differentiator in client-facing roles.
CFA Society India connects you with charterholders across Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and beyond. The network opens doors to internships, referrals, and senior mentorship that degrees alone cannot match.
CA, BCom, MBA, BBA, engineering — CFA adds a powerful investment layer regardless of your starting qualification. Many CA Final holders pursue CFA to pivot from audit into asset management.
Level I is available four times a year. You study at your own pace, sit when ready, and can work full-time simultaneously. The flexibility is designed for serious professionals.
CFA is not for everyone — and that is part of what makes it valuable. Here are the five profiles for whom CFA is the right qualification.
If your goal is equity research, portfolio management, or investment banking, CFA is the direct credential. Start Level I in your final year of graduation and enter the job market with Level I already cleared.
CA is exceptional for audit, tax, and compliance. But if you want to move into asset management, equity research, or private equity, CFA is the qualification employers look for. Many CA Final holders pursue CFA to make this switch.
If you are currently in banking, treasury, corporate finance, or financial analysis and want to move into a buy-side or sell-side role, CFA signals exactly that intent to hiring managers. Weekend batches are designed for you.
CFA Level III's curriculum is heavily weighted toward wealth planning, private wealth management, and portfolio construction for individual clients. If your goal is to advise high-net-worth individuals, CFA is specifically built for your career.
CFA is recognised by financial regulators and employers in every major global financial centre. If your goal is a role in Dubai, Singapore, London, or New York, CFA is the credential that gets your CV noticed regardless of which Indian university you attended.
One of the most common misconceptions about CFA is that it requires a finance or commerce background. It does not. CFA Institute accepts applications from graduates of any discipline — engineering, law, sciences, arts — as long as you hold a bachelor's degree or are in the final year of your undergraduate programme.
To register for CFA Level I, you must meet one of the following criteria:
Once you pass Levels I, II, and III, you apply for the CFA charter. To be awarded the charter, you must also demonstrate:
You do not need to complete your exams before gaining experience, nor do you need experience before sitting exams. Most candidates study while working — accumulating professional experience hours simultaneously. By the time they pass Level III, many candidates already have sufficient experience for the charter application.
A final-year student who registers for Level I, passes all three levels over 2–3 years while working, and accumulates 4,000 experience hours can receive the CFA charter as early as age 24–25.
Three levels, one global credential. Here is what each level tests, how long it typically takes, and what career doors it opens along the way.
Unlike ACCA, CPA, or CMA, CFA grants zero exemptions for prior qualifications. A CA Final pass holder starts at Level I. A PhD in Finance starts at Level I. Here is why that matters — and how to use it strategically.
| Your Current Qualification | CFA Entry Point | Strategic Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| BCom / BBA Graduate | Level I | Strong FRA foundation — use it |
| CA Foundation / Intermediate | Level I | Accounting skills help in FRA & Corporate Finance |
| CA Final Pass | Level I | FRA & Ethics easier — aim for top pass |
| MBA Finance | Level I | Quant & Economics background helps significantly |
| ACCA Member | Level I | FRA expertise is a significant advantage |
| CMA USA | Level I | Management accounting crossover helps in Portfolio topics |
| Engineering + Finance work | Level I | Strong in Quant — invest extra time in FRA |

The CFA designation is the investment industry's hiring signal. Here are the roles CFA charterholders typically hold:
CFA-qualified professionals are hired by asset management firms, investment banks, hedge funds, private equity firms, insurance companies, pension funds, corporate treasury departments, and financial advisory practices. In India, demand is concentrated in Mumbai's BFSI sector, but international roles in Dubai, Singapore, London, and New York are actively accessible with the CFA credential.

CFA is the one finance credential that works equally well whether you are in Mumbai, Dubai, Singapore, London, or New York. Here is what the credential unlocks in three key markets for Indian professionals:
With a global pass rate of ~44% for Level I, most candidates who sit the exam do not pass it. Here are the four most common reasons — and what Nahata Professional Academy does differently.
35+ years of legacy, Big 4 alumni mentors, and a structured approach that treats CFA preparation with the seriousness it deserves.
Mentors who have worked in investment banking, equity research, and financial advisory — not just academic teachers.
Customised calendars for each level. Level I builds the foundation. Level II focuses on application. Level III drills essay technique and portfolio synthesis.
Dedicated ethics sessions at every level — because ethics is 15–20% of the exam and the topic most candidates underestimate.
Timed mock exams from month one, reviewed question by question with your mentor. Real exam readiness, not just content coverage.
Every session is recorded and available on NPA's LMS. Review difficult topics as many times as needed, at your pace, on any device.
We keep batches deliberately small so every student gets direct mentor access — not a lecture hall experience where questions go unanswered.
CV reviews, LinkedIn optimisation, mock interviews, and connections to CFA Society India — because passing the exam is only step one.
Nahata Professional Academy has been producing finance professionals since 1992. CFA is our newest programme — built with the same rigour as every programme before it.
CA Gaurav Sabharwal's career spans the full spectrum of what CFA is designed to teach. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant, he joined the Big 4 — working with PwC and Deloitte in audit and advisory — before moving to Nomura's investment banking division, where he worked directly on equity analysis, deal structuring, and capital markets transactions.
That dual background — technical accounting rigour combined with real investment banking execution — is what makes his CFA mentoring distinctive. When CA Gaurav explains financial reporting analysis in Level II, he explains it the way it is actually used on the buy-side. When he teaches derivatives in Level III, he draws from instruments he worked with in practice, not from textbook abstractions.
Having spent 15+ years in finance education, CA Gaurav has seen exactly where and why CFA candidates fail at each level. His structured approach — ethics-first, application-focused, mock-exam-driven — is built entirely around preventing those failure points.
A team of practitioners — not just academics — who have held the roles you are preparing for. Every mentor brings real industry experience into the classroom.
